The Well Needed Reality Check

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. ~Philip K. Dick

As I drove my large meat wagon round and round the Tesco parking lot in London, I got a huge reality check – the parking spaces are not designed for my huge method of transport!

Many of us live in denial simply because it’s easier to do so. Why face the difficulties of life head up? Maybe if we ignore life’s circumstances long enough, they’ll just go away. Unfortunately whatever issues we refuse to acknowledge will never be solved. If we make a conscious decision to take stock of all the difficulties and obstacles that are impeding our way to achieving our dreams, we can figure out practical ways to resolve them and get on with the business of life. If we truly appreciate that certain broken relationships will never be fixed, we can open up our hearts and minds to new opportunities.

When we are brave and we confront the things that threaten to stand in our way and steal our goals and dreams, we can overcome. In taking the time to do a reality check, we can quickly identify goals that we have set that are unrealistic in the grand scheme of things. No one is perfect. We sometimes get things wrong or misconstrued. If I could get a dollar for every single time I’ve gotten it wrong in a major way, I’ll have no reason to get up and go to work in the morning! That is why it is essential to give ourselves a reality check so that we can separate what is doable from what is not. We can direct all our energies on what is achievable. The earlier we get to work, the sooner we can start to see results.
